Kathy: They would really kill you?
Fred: Yes. They are prevented from harming me because of the Duchess— if anything befalls me, they'd be the prime suspects. It would cost them all chance of being named as the Heir.
Fred: ...but as soon as one or the other succeeds to the throne... I expect that I will not long survive.
Kathy: And that is why it's so important to you to get me declared as the Duchess's rightful heir?
Fred: In a word, yes.

Kathy: Couldn't your parents do something? Change the contract?
Fred: I doubt anyone would agree to changing the conditions at this late date... and my parents believe that I should just "lie back and think of Rackenroon."
Fred: *Brrr!* As if that would help!
