Book: HYENA ESTRUS CYCLE
Book: A female hyena reaches sexual maturity at around age twenty. Hyenas come into estrus once a year. The heat period is nearly undetectable by non-hyenas; the female may seem a little moodier than normal, either by being crankier, or by becoming more friendly and affectionate. The estrous period can last anywhere from three days to a week.
Book: The presence of a male can stimulate the female's breeding cycle. Males from the natal clan do not trigger any response from the female; however, an immigrant male from an unrelated clan will not only be able to detect the female's condition, but his pheromones will serve as a catalyst to bring her into full-on heat. She will then pursue him until she convinces him of her intentions. As the males as normally terrified of the females, she often has to get him alone in some private spot, where she signals her readiness by being tender, gentle, and playful. Copulation soon follows.
