A: Cold Efficiency
Kathy: Wait—! You mean they turn over their children to be— to be—
Fred: Of course. It's much more efficient than hunting.
Fred: You eat meat. Quite a bit of it. Where did you think it came from?
Kathy: I know, but... when you put it in those terms... the very notion seems utterly ghastly!
Fred: I suppose in America, where the dead are consigned to the grocery stores, and meat is grown in vats, you don't get to think much about these things. But here, if we don't control the population, they would quickly outstrip the ability of the land to support them.
B: For Better Or Worse
Kathy: Yes, I know that— but how can they do that— to give birth to a child, knowing it has a destiny— and it's not a good one—!
Fred: "Good" and "Bad" are relative terms here, Your Grace. They understand that. We all do. It's what works for us.
Fred: Which is worse— to be quickly killed and eaten, thus sparing the rest of your family, or to all die a slow death due to starvation?
