A: Death And Dishonour
Kathy: Your own parents wouldn't try to save your life?!
Fred: My parents have resented me from the day I was yanked into this world... my twin sister died in the womb, and the emergency Caesarean performed to deliver me left my mother sterile... despite all her money, her only heir was a small and sickly little boy...
Fred: When I survived against all expectations, they decided it prudent to provide me with the best education money could buy. But no affection. I was fobbed off on nannies, tutors, and boarding school... and finally sold to the Duchess in order to keep tabs on their "investment." Which, considering their profligacy, was very wise. They believe they have set me up well in the world. So to try to weasel my way out of the contract now would be... dishonourable.
B: The Bigger Picture
That's— that's horrible!!
Fred: Now perhaps you see why I am reluctant to talk about myself. I am sorry I did not tell you this up front, but I find the whole subject to be... rather distressing...
Fred: ...and I felt that my own desperate circumstances would not be as important to you as the knowledge that the fate of nations is at stake.
Kathy: So you weren't making that part up?
Fred: Ma'am, rest assured, I never make things up.
