Maximize the fear
Fred: Never forget, you are constantly being tested! Hyenas rule the Maramasai, but only because all the other species fear us!
Fred: Everything we do is calculated to maximize that fear— from the names we choose to the clothes we wear! I gave you boots because only very high-ranking officials wear them!
Fred: Trust me, Your Grace— you cannot afford to be friendly. You're in Africa now. Show the slightest bit of weakness, and your reign will be a very short one.
